Loosen Brothers 2008 German Riesling "Dr. L" Review

Dr. Loosen and his Riesling

We don’t gush and fawn over Dr. L simply because we are star struck. It’s more than his deep family roots in the German wine culture. It’s more than Dr. Loosen’s  approachable and unique character. These things, impressive as they may be, are just bonus.  If you ever doubt the reason to gush over Dr. Loosen, all one needs to do is taste what he does with Riesling.

Never Doubt Dr. L

I have to admit for a half second I felt that judgment base recoil when seeing the twist off metal top.  Truth be told, the metal twist tops on wine frustrate me as I often lack the hand strength to break the seal. I don’t like having to rely on someone else to gain me entrance into a bottle! Granted, once the seal has been broken, my problems are solved and yes, it is nice to know that if the bottle is not finished off in one seating, then the precious Riesling of Dr. Loosen will be safely sealed off again in my icebox. Bottom line: I am a cork snob and I got over it! Why? Because I tasted Dr. Loosen’s wine. Yeasty. I can almost feel the warmth of the freshly baked bread as I sniff what comes forth from the neck of the wine bottle. Visions of thick crusty loaves heaped with country jam? Yes, Marmalade. It’s more than a glass of wine I pour into my glass; it is a picnic of the senses. Clear, clean and vibrant is the color. More warmth again, like rays of the sun.  Imagine a vast field over rolling hills, touched with thickets of trees and brush; a clear summer day with those cotton candy clouds, and the rays of the sun stream down and hit, dappled by the wind blowing through the countryside. What I pour in my glass is that liquid sun ray.

What Riesling He Doctors

Taste: Oh, My, God.taste-dr-l-riesling What happens then is simply beautiful to all the sense.  Honeyed and sweet, yes, you know it is a Riesling, but so balanced is the structure. So sleek and then fruity, but not overtly thick. I see peaches warmed from the sun. I hear bees buzzing over the clover. I feel a warm breeze and the sun beating down.  Green fields and deep from the ground the subtle smell of warm earth.  Birds and crickets chirp, a creek flows, in the distance a milk cow bellows.  There might be a foot of  New England snow on the ground outside, but with a sip of Dr. L’s  Riesling, I experience a Germanic pastoral fantasy in wine.  Seriously, all I can say is that if you have not every tried Dr. L’s wines, and even if you say you dislike anything “sweet”; you need to try the Dr. L / Loosen Brothers 2008 Reisling.  How else can you experience a complete holiday  in the German countryside for only $12.00 a bottle?
