Malbec Argentina Produces Malbec Wines like Cake
The Malbec grape has generally been used for blending throughout history. We need to thank Argentina and their sun-drenched climate that has given us a red wine, 100% pure Malbec, with richness and depth that does compare to a Layer Cake.
Love the Story of Layer Cake Wines
From the back of the handsome and artful Layer Cake Malbec bottle and also the winery’s website, comes the charming story of their name:
“My old grandfather made and enjoyed wine for 80 years. He told me the soils in which the vines lived were a layer cake. He said, the wine, if properly made, was like a great layer cake, fruit, mocha, chocolate, and hints of spice  and rich, always rich. ‘Never pass up a good Layer Cake,’ he would say.
This Wine is Better than a good Layer Cake!
The Malbec grape is among the “big six” for red wine grapes originating from the Bordeaux region of France, and quickly becoming Argentina’s signature grape. The work of the people of Mendoza and the South American wine industry have turned the land into an oasis of wine by the Los Andes Mountains. One might wonder if it can really live up to the layer Cake comparison and then one tastes the wine. Visually, this Malbec has a super dense and dark purple colored that resembles smashed blueberries or overripe plums.  It pours out dark and thick and looks like it would taste heavy. The nose is filled immediately with dark black fruits, but quickly followed by spice, chocolates, colas, fire roasted, I almost want to say BBQ?  Then upon tasting one’s mouths almost explodes with a full jammy fruit bomb. There is a rich sweetness from the grapes that dances on the pallet and made my tongue so happy. A big huge flavor, yet still soft in tannins.  The big flavor is almost expected from the deep color, but the softness and smooth ease of drinking a lighter style of is surprising!
Layers of Wine in Layer Cake
Layer Cake’s malbec really does live up to it’s name. As I sip, I envision my mouth cutting through the different layers of flavor.
- Ripe Blackberry
- Stewed Dark Fruits
- Cola
- Moist Earth
- Roasted Meats
- Fire and  barbecue
- Spice, Anise
- Heat
- Soft Chewy Tannins
In certain ways, the 2008 Layer Cake Malbec seems to rapidly come of age during each and every sip! From a dark fruit filled youth to a elegant maturity every time! It’s different, it’s complex and it’s not like an expected wine. It’s like a delightful birthday treat! The Wine Advocate Rating of 91 is well deserved and the $14.00 price makes Layer Cake wine an incredible value.
