2007 Darioush Cabernet Sauvignon Caravan from Napa Valley, California: Wine Review

Darioush Winery Crafts a Caravan California Cabernet

Darioush Winery is known for the Bordeaux styled reds.  The 2007 Caravan is no exception, made mostly from Cabernet, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

What do You Call a Travelling Cabernet?

The name Caravan comes from the fact that the winery has multiple properties, and this specific wine comes not only from Napa Valley, but also their Mount Veeder estate.  While the verdict is still out on the 2007 vintage in California, some wines are convincing critics that it may be a great year.  Some of the most known critics out there consider it a sleeper vintage.  The 2007 Caravan by Darioush is a persuasive example that 2007 has a lot to offer.

Wine Review: 2007 Darioush Cabernet Sauvignon

Once I tasted the wine I knew I should have let it decant for much longer than I had (which was a grand total of about 5 minutes). After a few hours, this wine had a lot to say. The nose opened up, and the black fruit was strong.  You could almost sense a coffee aroma too.  It’s a pretty dark wine, but not teeth staining, but the legs are long enough to reconsider that statement. The tannins from the first taste, before decanting, had smoothed out and became silky, rather velvety, and had an impressively smooth texture.  Up front, I tasted that black fruit and coffee that the nose suggested.  There is almost a hint of cherry and some definite oak on the long and pure finish. This wine has some real balance.  What a great effort, I would certainly suggest this to anyone who is into Bordeaux.

The 2007 Darioush Cabernet Sauvignon has a lot to offer and I think it is ready to drink now, of course after a few hours of decanting, or you could drink this after 10-12 years of cellaring, though I doubt it can get any smoother.  With a Wine Advocate rating of 90 points and a fantastic sale price right now of $28.00 rather than $40.00, both in taste and value, the 2007 Darioush Cabernet Sauvignon is not to be missed.
